Liberation Through Limitation

Attack Mag interviews Korg designers Tatsuya Takahashi and Yuki Ohta.

The Democratization of Synthesis: Korg Designers on the Making of the Minilouge

A Volca is not a jack of all trades, they are each good at one thing, and this is something in common with the comeback of hardware in general. It’s simple machines doing simple things so your mind is free to enter a creative space. That’s at the root of the Volca concept: liberation through limitation.

Attack Mag nailed it with the “Democratization of Synthesis” line. Since purchasing my little Korg Volca boxes Tatsuya Takahashi has become a personal hero.

Happy Platypus

So, I’ve become obsessed with this series of little groove boxes by Korg, called Volca, and have been setting up a little low budget techno music rig. It’s been amazing fun.

I recorded this little jam last week. It’s got sort of a Detroit vibe going on, I think… anyway, I’m really happy with the sound and totally digging my new obsession. 🙂

Panasonic is bringing back the SL-1200

As for why Panasonic is bringing back the 1200 now, after a six-year hiatus, the company says it’s a direct response to the recent growth in vinyl sales.

I still have my ollllld 1200’s. I bought them second (third?) hand 15 years ago and they looked like they were atleast 15 years old when I bought them. Super awesome, all around.

Stop Calling Night Owls Lazy

Waking up early is perceived as a quality. Which is ridiculous. There’s no reason to think of it as a quality.

levels.io on night owls, and the concept of time.

In a nut shell, where possible, we should be working when we are most effective, and when we do our best work.

Totally agree, and I tend to be a night owl as well, but I have a day job so balance can be difficult.

Time is such an odd construct.

Steaming Into History (2015)

Steaming Into History is a non-profit organization that runs a replica Cival War era steam locomotive in New Freedom, Pennysylvania. Learn more about them here.

The short of it is that you ride on this super cool old train for an hour trip to a Christmas tree farm. Once you arrive at the destination there’s horse drawn carraiges waiting to take you from the train stop to the Christmas tree farm. You cut your tree down, pay, grab a hot chocolate and head back to the train.

It’s a really nice day for the family and it’s looking like it’s going to become a tradition for us. We were even able to take my mom this year! Here’s photos from last years trip, and photos from todays trip are below.

Great way to cap off a fantastic Thanksgiving wekeend. 🙂
